Finding C. Memi: Bitter Lake Recordings and Japan’s ’80s Synth Scene

Infatuated with the music of the 1980s Japanese underground, Adam Whites, founder of hardcore-punk label Katorga Works, began a reissue label called Bitter Lake Recordings that focuses specifically on that scene. C. Memi was an Osaka folk musician who turned to new wave in the early 80s, releasing a small handful of obscure, synth-heavy records that never gained traction. This is a story about her and Whites's discovery of her fleeting catalog.
